Craigslist Navigation Restructure

Roles During Project - UX Designer, Information Architect

UX Methods Used - Card Sorting, Site Mapping

Tools Used - Optimal Sort, Axure

Purpose

The purpose of this project was to redesign Craiglist navigation structure in order to make it more user friendly and accessible.

Processes Used

I used a combination of sitemapping, card sorting, and usability testing to effectively redesign Craigslist navigation structure. Below are the steps I took to complete this objective.

Step 1 - In order to understand the users' need of Craigslist, I decided to put together a series of scenarios. Below are visuals of scenarios.

Step 2 - One of the main issues I've encountered with the Craigslist navigation is how content is structured and organized. To reorganize the content, I put together a content inventory to solve this issue. Below is a visual of my content inventory.

Step 3 - After creating the content inventory, I created a sitemap to reorganize the navigation of the Craigslist website. Here is a link to my sitemap: Sitemap

Step 4 - After that, I created a card sorting activity using Optimal Sort in order to users/participants to organize content into categories and subcategories (The card sort was created based off of my second sitemap draft). This sitemap was created to confirm whether or not users would organize information into the specified categories that I created.

After using the card sorting method, I performed 2 rounds of usability testing with a tree-jack study I created using Optimal Sort. In the tree-jack study, I created 3 tasks. The tasks entailed telling the user to search for a couch that's for free, an apartment for rent, and a 9-5 job.

Results

Results from the Card Sort - The results of my card sort confirmed that my sitemap design met users' requirements and needs. Below are visuals of my card sorting results.

Results from 1st Round of Usability Testing - For the 1st round of usability testing, I've discovered that users had a 70% success rate for the first task, an 80% success rate for the second task, and a 90% sucess rate for the third task. Below are visuals of my results.

Results from 2nd Round Usability Testing - Even though users had a higher success rate with my redesigned navigation versus the original Craigslist navigation, I rephrased the wording in my instructions for my second round of usability testing in order to make the tasks more clear and understandable. Because I have done that, I've discovered that users had a 90% success rate for the first task, a 100% success rate for the second task, and a 100% success rate for the third task. This confirmed that my sitemap design worked to users' requirements and needs. Below are visuals of my results.
